Knee Cartilage Diagnosis And Treatment

When you approach an ortho surgeon at Cartilage Transplant Knee, they will conduct a physical examination of your knee and ask you basic questions about causes and symptoms. Based on your answers, they will suggest the best diagnostic measures for the issue. X-ray and MRI are two of the most common diagnostic tests used in the case of a knee cartilage transplant. However, damage in the cartilage cannot be detected with a normal MRI. At Cartilage Transplant Knee, we perform finer MRI (cartilage sequence MRI) to detect the precise issue and identify the damage to your knee cartilage. With years of experience in the sector, our ortho doctors will provide you with detailed results and explain exactly what is wrong with your knee.

Working Process

Stages Of Knee Cartilage Damage

Effective diagnosis will allow the doctor to determine your knee cartilage damage stage. This stage determines the treatment that should follow and the suitable actions to be performed by the doctors.

Here are the four major stages of knee cartilage damage:

Stage 1

This is the stage where your knee cartilage softens and/or swells because of undue pressure, twisting, or conditions like osteoarthritis. Damage at this stage can be tackled with non-surgical procedures.

Stage 2

This is the stage characterized by partial loss of thickness in the cartilage with fissures appearing on the surface. However, these fissures have not reached the subchondral bone. Damage at this stage can also be tackled with non- surgical procedures.

Stage 3

At this stage, the damage to your knee cartilage is more severe as the fissuring extends to the subchondral bone. Damage at this stage often requires knee cartilage transplant surgery.

Stage 4

This is the final stage of knee cartilage damage, where the subchondral bone gets exposed. Damage at this stage calls for a knee cartilage transplant surgery.

Knee Cartilage Treatment

In the case of stage 3 or stage 4 damage, your doctor will recommend a knee cartilage transplant surgery. This surgery involves taking a section of healthy tissue (graft) and replacing the damaged cartilage with the same. The ortho surgeons at Cartilage Transplant Knee perform two major types of knee cartilage transplant surgeries:

  • Single-stage Knee Cartilage Transplant Surgery
  • As the name suggests, this is a surgery that involves a single stage of knee cartilage transplant. Here, the surgeon takes a graft from a donor and replaces the patient’s damaged knee cartilage. Doctors at CTK also perform single-stage realignment surgeries to restore knee mobility and delay the need for total knee replacement. A single-stage knee cartilage transplant surgery takes lesser time as it involves a ready graft taken from a donor. This makes it suitable for patients who are not Indian residents and cannot dedicate a lot of time to getting treated.

  • Two-stage Knee Cartilage Transplant Surgery
  • This surgery involves two stages. During the first stage, the surgeon takes a graft from the patient’s healthy cartilage and grows it under controlled conditions. The second stage involves replacing the patient’s damaged cartilage with the grown graft. While the two-stage cartilage transplant surgery takes longer, it is more effective as it involves the patient’s own cartilage. It is suitable for local patients who are willing to give time for their knees to heal.

Two-stage Knee Cartilage Transplant Surgery
Post-surgical Rehabilitation
  • Post-surgical Rehabilitation
  • All orthopedic surgeons at Cartilage Transplant Knee focus on extensive post- surgical rehabilitation. We recommend at least 3 to 6 months of rehabilitation to ensure that your knee is fully recovered. Rehabilitation is all about teaching your knee to behave normally again. It involves performing the right exercises and giving your knee the right amount of rest after a cartilage transplant surgery. The ortho doctors and physiotherapists at CTK make sure you return to normalcy as effectively as possible with post-surgical rehabilitation.
